BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG
These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

"Mandy" was released in 1974. It reached #1 on the charts in America and Canada. In Britain, the single climbed to #11. The Barry Manilow hit was actually a remake.
The original was issued by Scott English. Initially, the song was entitled "Brandy". English co-wrote it with Richard Kerr. While the single barely dented the US chart, the original version did reach #12 in the UK.
When Manilow covered the track, the title was changed to "Mandy" in order to avoid confusion with the Looking Glass #1 hit "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)".
