BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…

These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Needles And Pins

In 1964, The Searchers scored a major hit with the single "Needles And Pins". On the UK chart, the disc reached #1. As well as peaking at #2 in Australia, the single made the American Top 15. 

The original version of "Needles And Pins" was recorded by Jackie DeShannon. Issued a year before The Searchers' remake, her single topped the Canadian chart. 

British group Smokie returned the song to the UK Top 10 in 1977. Since DeShannon's original, countless remakes have followed.
